What is Shiatsu?

Shiatsu, literally meaning ‘finger pressure’, is a traditional Japanese healing art and uses stretches, pressure and acupressure points along the meridians or energy channels of the body, to stimulate the flow of vital energy and the body’s own natural healing ability.

An imbalance in a person’s energy may manifest as a headache, backache, depression, stress related condition or in many other ways. When the Qi or vital energy of the body is flowing smoothly then we are healthy in mind, body and spirit. When the Qi ceases to flow freely for either physical or emotional reasons then the resultant blockage or imbalance eventually manifests as a symptom. By working along the meridians and using specific pressure points, energy can be dispersed from congested areas and summoned to areas most in need, thereby restoring balance and harmony of the whole person on physical, mental and emotional levels.

What to expect in a session

A session lasts for 60 minutes and takes place on a futon on the floor. You are fully dressed but wearing loose fitting, comfortable clothing. On your initial session I shall ask you about your symptoms and lifestyle so that a full picture begins to emerge of you as an individual. Shiatsu embodies the whole person and all aspects of you on the mental, emotional and physical levels are taken into account. At the end of the session I may suggest and demonstrate some simple and practical exercises for you to do at home or specify certain recommendations to assist you in gradually taking responsibility for your own state of health and well being. After the session it is beneficial to rest for a couple of hours and avoid strenuous or stressful activity.

Clients often ask how many sessions they will need. It is impossible to generalise because the process of healing is unique to each individual. The client is advised to come weekly in acute conditions until symptoms begin to improve, then fortnightly and eventually with longer intervals in between sessions. Together we can decide on the best course of action.

What are the benefits?

Shiatsu can benefit a wide range of disorders, chronic and stress related conditions, including;

back pain, sciatica, neck pain, headache, migraine, digestive problems, menstrual problems, anxiety, depression and stress, lack of energy and motivation, low immunity, high blood pressure, joint and muscle stiffness/pain, computer RSI (repetitive strain injury), insomnia, fatigue, exhaustion and sports injuries.

Shiatsu helps to increase energy levels, improve stamina and posture, induce calm and deep relaxation, boost the immune system, increase flexibility, ease aches and pains, treat common ailments, restore and maintain good health and increase body awareness.

Jane studied with the European Shiatsu School to practitioner level and then went on to further her studies at post graduate level with the Healing-Shiatsu Education Centre. She has worked in private practice with adults since 1997 and is experienced in treating a diverse range of conditions.

She encountered Shiatsu through her interest in a more holistic, integrated approach to life, the individual and her own healing process. This led her onto the path of receiving, being inspired by, and ultimately studying Shiatsu and pursuing her own personal development and continued interest and insight into the emotional and mental and physical aspects of daily life.
