What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a painless, safe, holistic therapy which originated in ancient China. It involves the insertion of very fine needles at special points on the body to achieve mental and physical balance.

Diagnosis

Acupuncture begins with the diagnosis of the patient's energy imbalance. A detailed understanding of the patient's lifestyle, diet, work, medical history, emotional state and the nature of the symptoms is required. The condition of the tongue through its shape, colour and coating indicates the progression and degree of illness. The pulse is felt to indicate the balance of energy in the internal organs.

Treatment

Treatment is based on the principle that disorders are manifestations of imbalances in energy flow along certain pathways in the body. The insertion of needles into acupuncture points stimulates energy flow, restoring balance.

Will I feel the needles?

The needles are extremely fine and insertion is painless. A dull ache or tingling sensation is often apparent for a few seconds when the needle reaches the required depth.

Are there any side effects?

There are no inherent side effects to acupuncture treatment.

Is there any risk of infection?

Sterile, disposable, single use needles are always used by the acupuncturist. All acupuncture points used are cleaned with surgical spirit before insertion of the needles.

Is there anything I should tell the practitioner?

You will be asked lots of questions during your consultation but please be sure to inform the practitioner if you are pregnant or have been diagnosed with any medical condition.
